Back to March 2011, SmarterTools announced the release of SmarterMail 8, since then there’s been quite some discussion on the SmarterTools forum by “SmarterMailer” on when is the the next plan release of SmarterMail 9 as ‘SmarterMailer‘ has been expecting some features such the capability to support Clustering and High Availability. Today, SmarterTools posted on their SmarterTools Blog for a brief sneak preview of some of the major features they are going to introduce in their latest Windows mail server – SmarterMail 9. So, what’s going to be in SmarterMail 9?
Instant Messaging Support
One of the new features in SmarterMail 9 is the introducing of Instant Messaging by integrating the well known Jabber server . Through this integration, you can now use any Jabber-enabled Instant Messaging client such as Adium, Digsby and any others which support Jabber protocols without having to have a separate chat server and use an outside service like Google Talk, Live Messenger, Yahoo! or others. All the chats will be available within domains as to give SmarterMail admin full control access. All SmarterMail mailboxes will automatically have IM enabled via the Global Address List (GAL). This feature may comes in handy as through the recent article Instant Messaging May Surpass Emails which says : 54% of CIOs predicted that real-time communication technologies, such as instant messaging, SharePoint, Chatter and Yammer, will overtake email in the workplace in the next five years.
Exchange Web Services (EWS)
MAPI (Messaging Application Program Interface) is a Microsoft Windows program interface that enables you to send e-mail from within a Windows application and attach the document you are working on to the e-mail note. The support for MAPI for SmarterMail has been one of the heavy request by ‘SmarterMailer‘ in SmarterTools forum as they have been looking for better integration and synchronization of emails, contacts and calendars via Microsoft Outlook. However, Exchange Web Service appear will be the future for Microsoft product roadmap including of Microsoft Outlook 2012 as MAPI is essentially will be deprecated by Microsoft due to performance and its internal security requirements weren’t compatible with other platforms such as Mac. With the release of SmarterMail 9, SmarterMail will be one of the first mail server, after Exchange Mail Server to support Exchange Web Service, killing off any other mail servers with superb integration and usability!
New WebMail Interface
SmarterMail 7 brings a new webmail interface to the mail server which is carry over to SmarterMail 8. With SmarterMail 9, there will be another brand new updated interface that is ten times faster than SmarterMail 8.x (and it blows versions previous to 8.x out of the water)! The new interface will be used on the tablets as the iPad, on Samsung/Acer or other Android tablets and even on the upcoming (and great-looking) Windows 8 and the Metro interface just like how SmarterTrack 7 is!
